Drunk Drivers Pay Higher Car Insurance Premiums Due to Addiction

Driving under the influence does not only put your life at risk but your pocket as well. Driving under the influence of liquor and getting convicted of DUI can increase your current insurance premium to roughly $2,700 premiums over a number of years.

Insurers are so wary of high risk drivers. They look into your driving record in determining what you pay for the car insurance you’re applying for. A prior DUI or DWI conviction suggests that you are a risky driver, which translates to higher rates for your car insurance.

Who pays for damages to my car?

Your insurance policy may or may not pay for the damages to your vehicle if you were driving while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol. The nature of your car policy and type of car insurance determines your insurer’s extent of liability when it comes to DWI or DUI car damages.  If you are at fault and you receive a conviction for DWI or DUI, your car carrier shall pay the damages to the other driver. Liability insurance protects you from paying the other driver’s medical expenses and property damage. Liability insurance protects you even if the car accident happened while you are breaking the law.

But, there are many other DUI and DWI related costs which are not covered by liability insurance. You have to pay for your own medical expenses and vehicle repairs.  Unless you get full coverage with car collision and comprehensive insurance, you have to pay for your own medical expenses and vehicle repairs. Remember that liability insurance only covers the other driver when you are at fault.

Can the insurance carrier cancel my policy?

No. The insurance company can only refuse to renew your policy but it cannot cancel it in the middle of the policy.  If you incurred a DWI or DUI record, your insurance company shall automatically consider you a high risk driver. With this record, there is a high possibility that your policy will not be renewed.  If this is the case, you will have to look for another insurance company that will take high risk drivers. But, some states require additional papers and you have to find a company that can handle difficult policies.
