Synthetic Cathinones, or bath salts, is a relatively new drug here in the United States. However, it has rapidly become popular within the last decade, as it is a “legal” way of getting high. Synthetic Cathinone refers to a family of drugs that contain more than one synthetic element similar to cathinone (cathinone is an amphetamine-like substance that can be found in the Khat plant). It is referred to as “bath salts” in order to avoid being detected by law enforcement.
Individuals have taken these “bath salts” in a wide variety of ways. Typically, the user takes “bath salts” orally, inhaled, or via injection.
These “bath salts” are in the form of white or brown crystalline powder and can be acquired quite easily. They have been marketed as “plant food,” “phone screen cleaner,” and “jewelry cleaner.” They have been sold online and in stores that specialize in drug paraphernalia, under a wide variety of names. Some of these names include:
The effects of these “bath salts” on the brain are similar to the effects of cocaine and amphetamines, as it raises the amount of neurotransmitter dopamine in circuits of the brain. This surge creates feelings of euphoria and increases the user’s activity, while raising blood pressure and heart rate.
Side effects of “bath salt” abuse include:
In the United Kingdom, mephadrone was banned in 2010. Unfortunately, replacement chemicals were created and sold as “jewelry cleaner,” under a brand name called “Cosmic Blast.”

·         “Bloom”
·         “Scarface”
·         “Cloud Nine”
·         “Lunar Wave”
·         “Ivory Wave”
·         “Vanilla Sky”
“Bath salts” have become a growing health and safety issue due to how intoxicating it is. It can produce feelings of euphoria and paranoia. Deaths have occurred from using this drug.

·         Panic attacks
Individuals who experience “excited delirium” experience side effects that include:
·         Dehydration
·         Kidney failure
·         Breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue
The combination of MDPV, methadrone, butylone, and mephedrone has been known to be fatal. Those who use “bath salts” on a regular basis have an increased risk of developing a dependency to the drug. Individuals who abruptly stop using Synthetic Cathinones can develop serious withdrawal symptoms
Another danger that can happen with synthetic Cathinones is that they could contain unknown ingredients, which could have harmful side effects of their own. Also, those purchasing what they think is ecstasy, may receive synthetic Cathinones instead. Such has occurred in the Netherlands, where mephedrone has been substituted for MDMA in pills labelled ecstasy.
In 2011, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration banned three synthetic cathinones, pending an investigation. In 2012, President Barack Obama signed legislation into law banning mephadrone and MDPV permanently, along with other synthetic drugs that are often sold as a marijuana substitution.
If you, or someone you know, may be addicted to Synthetic Cathinones, you can seek help at a drug treatment facility in your area. These facilities are equipped to help individuals overcome their addictions and live balanced and healthy lives.
