Can a reformulation of OxyContin prevent illicit use of OxyContin?

Prescription painkiller abuse is becoming an increasingly unfortunate problem here in the United States. With millions of individuals taking prescription painkillers to relieve symptom of pain, the chances of dependency are astronomical. It actually does not take long for a psychological dependency on opiates, such as OxyContin, to take effect. The longer an individual uses OxyContin, the higher the chances that the user will develop a tolerance to the drug. It will then require the individual to use more of the drug in order to achieve the effects of the drug.
Much research has been done to figure out how to stop the illicit use of OxyContin.
Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis wonder whether a reformulation of OxyContin can deter illicit use of the drug. Around 11,000 drug users were surveyed at 150 treatment facilities in 48 states in the United States. Researchers found that an older formulation of OxyContin was successful in helping individuals to stop abusing OxyContin, but this only worked to a point. Theodore Cicero, a professor of neuropharmacology in Psychiatry found that the formulation was great as a first line of defense. This original formulation of OxyContin contained elevated amounts of oxycodone. In an attempted to discourage abuse of OxyContin, a newer formulation was designed so it would make it much harder for individuals to crush or dissolve the pills in an attempt to liquefy and inject it.
This abuse-deterrent was introduced in 2010 and has become less attractive to individuals looking to abuse OxyContin. While this newer formulation is less attractive to those who abuse OxyContin, it will not stop individuals from abusing the drug. They will find other means to abuse OxyContin, or another drug. Many individuals who abuse OxyContin move onto a much more dangerous opiate: heroin.
